Futura becomes one of the first carbon-neutral rec2rec companies
Futura demonstrates its commitment to helping reduce climate change by reducing emissions by 100%
Minimising impact on the environment is a topic that’s high on the agenda for most ethically run organisations, and leading Northwest rec2rec company Futura is no exception.
While careful power management, recycling and procurement can help to significantly minimise an organisation’s carbon footprint, it’s not possible for a modern organisation to achieve ‘zero carbon footprint’ status without carbon offsetting.
“At Futura,“ says managing director John Whalley, “we don’t like to settle for second best. We’re leaders in recruitment and we want to be leaders in every aspect of how we run our business. We’re committed to being as environmentally responsible as possible, so becoming carbon neutral was the only sensible target to aim for.”
To achieve this, Futura worked with the Carbon Neutral Company, to audit all of its emissions, including from energy consumption, waste and business travel. Once identified, these were reduced by a combination of internal changes (such as increased recycling and adopting low-carbon vehicles) with carbon offsetting. Through offsetting, every tonne of CO2 that is emitted by Futura is matched by an equivalent amount saved by a project somewhere else in the world.
The Carbon Neutral Company is one of the world’s leading carbon offsetting companies which independently audits organisations and awards a world-recognised carbon-neutral certification upon successful reduction of emissions and use of carbon offsetting.
Futura is assessed each year, and has annual targets for further reductions internally to meet in order to maintain its status.
“We believe that we’re one of the first recruitment companies to have taken this step,“ says Whalley, “but we’re not strangers to being leaders in our field. This is such an important topic that we’d really expect all ethically led companies to follow suit within a few years.”

Futura’s certificate, which shows that it measured greenhouse gas emissions and reduced them to net zero through internal change and/or externally, through carbon offsetting in accordance with the requirements of the CarbonNeutral Protocol. View certificate as PDF.
