The unfashionable come to the fore

Southampton have not only risen to 4th place in the league above the likes of City, Spurs, Everton and ManU but they also have the meanest defence in the league conceding a mere 2 goals in 7 games. Last year, the FL managers' most popular Southampton player was undoubtedly Ricky Lambert, but it's not surprising that the top 3 Southampton points winners are Artur Boruc, the goalie and two defenders, Fonte and Lovren. All have way over 40 points and are averaging over 6 points a game. At £5.2m, Lovren has got to be on everyone's transfer target list. Some have already got there evidenced by his popularity going from 3% to 7% last week alone.

Most managers have still stuck with RvP as their captain despite him averaging a mere one point per game over the past 3 games. At £14m he’s very expensive for that performance and it’s not surprising that he’s dropped to 10th place in the Value/Form table for ManU players. The most vice-captained player was Giroud who also disappointed. The Value/ Form table is packed with unfashionable players from the likes of Southampton, Hull, Villa and WBA. In fact, the only player from one of the big clubs to get into the Value/Form top 10 is Aaron Ramsey.

Let’s see what next week brings eh?

In our league Jon Pheasant and Dave Cattell climbed right back to the top by choosing Sturridge as their captain, but the overall scores were on the low side with our favourite players simply not performing. We’ve now got to that stage of the FL season where teams are all very similar to each other and the top spot is usually decided by the choice of captain rather than the choice of players. It’s interesting that out of our top 10, 9 of us chose either Sturridge or Suarez as captain with Norwich City fan Lawrence Chilver being the odd one out in choosing Wayne Rooney. Lawrence dropped a place from 6th to 7th.

The top 10 are as follows:

Jon Pheasant

Dave Cattell

Matt Holbrook

Bernie Wilcox, Pari Passu

James Mackinnon

Jack Wilcox, Bauhaus

Laurence Chilver

Stu Smith

Sachin Ruparella

Marc Cohen

Manager of the Week

Scrolling down to 21st place, we find Peter Bradley’s Nappy Rash with 55 points on the week. Peter was helped by having Evra, Gerrard, Oscar, Negredo and Suarez as his captain. Also on 55 points for the week was Chelsea fan Steve Simmonds at 15th place in the league.

Very well done Peter and Steve.

Sitting at 74th place in the league, Alex McDowell scored an amazing 58 points this week. He had no blockbuster choices and even had Ozil as his captain but nevertheless, he picked up lots of 5/6/7 pointers throughout the team and the cream on the top was picking Newcastle’s Remy who bagged him 13 points. With 34 points in the last 3 games and 5 goals in 5 games, could Remy be the solution for those budget-constrained managers looking for a cheap goal scorer? Interesting how he’s now at Newcastle as he was heading there last January before QPR gazumped the deal and took him to Loftus Road. We’re sure that Recruitment International editor and massive QPR fan David Head would agree that he was never that good for The Hoops.

Taxi for...........

Vincent Kompany

The City captain was none too happy on Saturday and came straight off as soon as he felt his groin go in the match against Everton. This was the same injury that kept him out for nearly a month at the start of the season so it’s quite a worry for him and those FL managers who have chosen him. He does have the international break to recover if it’s only a strain but it’s definitely one to watch.

The Dream Team

The Dreamteam is the best combination of players that you can pick that week. It’s always a good clue to up and coming players that few managers have picked which is important for those of you not in the top ten because you’re never going to make it by picking the same players as the top managers. Looking for value in unpopular but high performing players is essential if you’re going to make progress.

Even outside of the Southampton players there are some definite bargains here including Sakho, Remy and of course, ManU’s Januzaj who looks like he’ll be getting a regular place in David Moyes’ side after his two super goals against Sunderland at the weekend.

“When I first approached Megan about beginning a search for a move into another job she quickly understood exactly what I was looking for and was able to identify suitable jobs. Ahead of my interview Megan offered fantastic advice and went into great detail about the role and specifically the company, which meant I was fully prepared. At offer stage once again Megan was on hand with great advice and ensured the process went through without any issues. I'd certainly recommend anyone who is looking for a new role to get in touch!”
